Andrew College's Ijon Owens Racks Up a Pair of Post-Season Honors
CUTHBERT, Ga. -- Andrew College's Ijon Owens has been named the Georgia College Athletic Association (GCAA) Freshman of the Year as well as racking up GCAA All-Region Second Team honors, voted on by the coaches in the conference.
Owens, who averaged 18.3 points per game, on 45% shooting from the field, including 37% on 3-pt. attempts overall, finished third in conference scoring. In GCAA conference play, Owens was even better, leading all regulars in the 16 conference matches at 20.7 ppg. He also averaged a team-leading 3.9 assists per game (apg), and 4.9 rebounds per game (rpg).
"Ijon is the ultimate teammate, has certainly been our most consistent player all season long and even more so once conference time came around," Andrew College Head Coach Jamie Brooks said. "He is one of the most humble and positive young men I have ever been around and is certainly the kind of person the rest of our young team can look up to on and off the court. He is genuine and simply loves his teammates."
The 6-foot guard from Cordele, Ga. had 12 games of 20 or more points and 1 game with more than 30 points, including his season-high of 31 points against Central Ga. Tech on February 24. He was named the GCAA Men's Basketball Div. I Player of the Week for the 9th week of the season. He started all 27 games he played in this season.
"This award is certainly well-deserved for Ijon and it is a tremendous honor for our entire program in our first year," Brooks said. "We have some pieces that we can build upon here and Ijon will certainly be a big part of our program going forward."
