Former Andrew Golfer Andreas Tancred Just Misses British Open Chance

CUTHBERT, Ga. -- Former Andrew College Men's Golf member Andreas Tancred threw his lot in with 56 other amateur and professional golfers at the County Louth Golf Club in Ireland, looking for one of the seven spots being allocated from the 18 hole round, that would advance to one the four Final Qualifying tournaments. Three qualifiers from each Final Qualifying tournament would send the final 12 golfers into the 147th British Open. Formally known as The Open Championship, the British Open is being held at the Carnoustie Golf Links in Scotland, from July 19-22.

Founded in 1892, County Louth Golf Club, or Baltray as it is more commonly known, has established itself as one of Ireland's finest links courses. Winner of the 2017 IGTOA Links course of the year and host to two Irish Opens the course stands as a par 72 and measures 7,031 yards from the Championship tee.  Tancred shot a blistering 69(-3) to put him T6th with 2 other golfers. A playoff between the 3 golfers would determine the last two qualifiers. South Africa's Robert Braithwaite advanced with a par on the 1st sudden death hole, dropping it down to just Tancred and Ireland's Conor O'Rourke for the last spot, which Tancred won on the 4th sudden death playoff hole. On to the Renaissance Club in East Lothian, Enland, Tancred teed off with 71 other golfers, looking for one the last three spots into the 147th Open Championship. Tancred shot 75-73(+6) to finish in a T37th. Tancred was quoted after the 36 hole event, "A tradition is born I believe .. to try to qualify for @theopen every summer until I make it One of the sickest golf experiences ever! Just didn't have it today with 75-73 on a windy, very firm and demanding course around the greens but a +6 total will never be enough to play in a major championship. "

Tancred had a stellar career at Andrew College. One of the top golfers in the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA), Tancred ranked as the no. 1 player in his region and fifth-ranked overall in the country. At the conclusion of the fall season his sophomore year, Tancred posted a 70.75 stroke average over three tournaments and was no. 14 on Golfstat's Top-100 NJCAA Players to Watch. His top performance came at the Dale Dover Invitational where he tied for first with scores of 69-73-66 for a 54-hole total of 208. He went on the be named a NJCAA Division II PING All-American (2nd team), after being named an All-Region selection in his freshman year. He went on to play his final two years at Lynn University, and NCAA Div. II power in Boca Raton, FL.
