Tigers Sweep Gordon State 7-6 & 1-0; Podger With Big Day

CUTHBERT, Ga. -- Saturday afternoon at the Hord Athletic Complex, the Andrew College baseball team took on Gordon State, a team that had beaten Andrew seven times in a row, and were 13-1 against the Tigers since 2017, and promptly fell behind 4-0 after one inning, then 5-0 heading into the bottom of the 5th inning, before striking back with 4 runs in the 5th inning and 2 more runs in the 6th, tying the game at 6-6, then Kaleb Podger singled in the eventual game-winner in the 7th, and Alex Blount tossed 3.1 innings, to pick up the win and run his season record to 2-0, in the game one, 7-6 win. Game two ended bizarrely after the top of the 3rd inning with the Tigers up 1-0 on Griffin Long's 5th homer of the year, when Gordon State Head Coach Kent Rollins was ejected by the home plate umpire. Unable to continue due to no other coach available, Gordon was forced to forfeit, completing the sweep and running the Tigers overall record to 18-11-1 and 3-3 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA).

Podger led the way in the 7-6 win, going 3 for 5 with 4 RBI, Barron Northorp was 2 for 2 with a pair of runs scored, Blake Falor and JT Whatley were 2 for 3 with a run scored, and Blount came on in the top of the 6th inning to snuff out a rally, then kept the Highlanders at bay over the final 3 innings, scattering 2 hits and 1 walk around 3 strikeouts to nail down the win. Long gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead with a solo homer in the bottom of the 1st inning in game two, shortly before the game was ended.

Several Tigers are among the statistical leaders in the GCAA as they reached the 30 game mark, with Long leading the league with 35 RBI, 4th in hitting with a .447 avg and T2nd with 5 homeruns, Podger leads the league with a .467 avg, and is 4th with 32 RBI, Whatley is also T2nd with 5 homers, Jacob Pierce is second with 27 stolen bases, and Alex Jarrell is T4th with 33 strikeouts.

The Tigers travel to South Ga. State on Tuesday for a 2:00 pm doubleheader.
